Pokémon Champions: PP without PP Max and confirmed Mega abilities

Find out how PP changes in Pokémon Champions: no PP Max/PP Up, new values per move, confirmed Megas, and a launch date of April 8, 2026.

Quick summary

The changes to PP reshape how moves are managed in Pokémon Champions, removing the increase from PP Max/PP Up. In addition, Mega-Dragonite and Mega-Froslass abilities have already been confirmed, and a launch focused only on Mega Evolution is suggested.

What matters most

The new information package for Pokémon Champions isn’t limited to a simple visual improvement: it also affects the foundation of competitive strategy. The game moves to a model with deep changes in move management and which mechanics are available from the start.

For the launch, the confirmed schedule is April 8, 2026 for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, with mobile devices coming later.

PP system rework: goodbye to PP Max and PP Up

One of the most striking adjustments is the restructuring of the Power Points (PP) system. The key novelty is that there are no longer any Maximum PP (PP Max/PP Up). Instead, each move comes with a fixed number that cannot be increased.

As shared, the PP for moves now become these values:

  • 5 PP moves → now have 8 PP (with the exception of Protect, which becomes 8 PP instead of 10)
  • 10 PP moves → now have 12 PP
  • 15 PP moves → now have 16 PP
  • Moves with more PP → now have 20 PP

Mega-Dragonite and Mega-Froslass: abilities confirmed

Beyond the mechanical side, abilities were confirmed for two Mega Evolutions tied to the “Champions” approach.

Mega-Dragonite with Multiscale

In both cases, the practical value for the player is understanding what the ability brings to the team style you want to build from the beginning.

  • Mega-Dragonite keeps Multiscale, keeping it as a very consistent offensive piece, especially in pressure roles.
  • Mega-Froslass adds Hail, connecting with teams looking to establish a snowy weather environment.

Mega Evolution only at launch: the rest arrives as a live service

Regarding additional mechanics, available information indicates that Pokémon Champions will offer only Mega Evolution at launch. The model is described as a “live service,” where other tools (such as Z-Moves, Dynamax, or Teracrystallization) would be added in seasonal updates.

This helps narrow down what can be prepared for the early phases: initial planning focuses on the Mega Evolution side without assuming the rest of the mechanics will be active on Day 1.

Pokémon Champions on Switch 2: higher resolution improvement

A related screenshot was also shared, tied to the Nintendo Switch 2 update. The official indication is that the game runs at higher resolution on this console, reinforcing the idea of a visual improvement linked to the platform.

Confirmed release dates

With these dates, what’s most useful for a competitive player is to review how the new distribution of fixed PP affects move cadence and, at the same time, which Mega abilities fit their way of battling.

  • April 8, 2026: Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2
  • Mobile: launch later

How to adapt your strategy to the new PP distribution

To gain an advantage right from the start, it’s a good idea to practice with the new “mental map” of fixed PP:

Since the increase via PP Max/PP Up isn’t available, the adjustment comes down to move selection, tactical rotation, and timing in battle.

  • If you use “cheap” 5 PP moves, remember they now have 8 PP: change the number of safe uses before you run out of resources.
  • If your plan relied on keeping pressure with 10 or 15 PP moves, their PP is now 12 and 16, respectively.
  • If your team leans on moves that used to fall into the higher ranges, the standard figure centers on 20 PP.
